subthalamus definition-
the ventral part of the thalamus
Subthalamus is the part of the diencephalon which is
wedged laterally between the thalamus and the hypothalamus.
Subthalamus is important for regulating movements produced
by skeletal muscles.
It is, not surprisingly, interconnected with other structures important
in movement, such as the basal ganglia and substantia nigra.
The bulk of the subthalamus is made up of the subthalamic
nucleus and another gray matter component is the zona incerta. There are
also several fiber bundles in the subthalamus. They are
the: subthalamic fasciculus, lenticular fasciculus, and ansa lenticularis.
Subthalamus definition may also be given as - a transition
zone in the anterior part of the diencephalon interposed between the thalamus,
hypothalamus, and tegmentum of the mesencephalon. Components of the subthalamus
include the subthalamic nucleus, zona incerta, nucleus of field H, and
the nucleus of ansa lenticularis. The latter contains the entopedencular
nucleus.
