Parkinsons Disease

Parkinsons Disease is an Idiopathic, Chronic, Progressive, Degenerative disorder of basal ganglia or nigrostriatal pathway .Parkinson disease is a brain disorder.Parkinsons disease occurs when certain nerve cells (neurons) in substantia nigra(a part of brain) die or become impaired. These cells produce a vital chemical known as dopamine which allows smooth, coordinated function of the body's muscles and movement. When approx. 80% of these nerve cells(dopamine producing cells) are damaged, the symptoms of Parkinson disease appear.

Parkinsons disease symptoms

Symptoms of parkinsons disease are :

  • Tremor of the hands, arms, legs, jaw, and face;
  • Rigidity or stiffness of the limbs and trunk;
  • Bradykinesia or slowness of movement, and
  • Postural instability or impaired balance and coordination.
  • Autonomic dysfunctions may also occur.

Most patients with Parkinsons Disease experiance some variations in their symptoms throughout the day.

Parkinsons Disease Surgery

Parkinsons disease characterized by progressive increasing stiffness all over body, tremor in limbs with difficulty in walking is no more incurable. These patients can be benefited by stereotactic Neurosurgery. Parkinsons disease usually starts at old age and slowly progresses over a period of time. Tremor and stiffness increases, voice becomes slow, walking becomes more and more difficult and ultimately patient has to lead a totally disabled and bedridden life. Parkinsons disease is caused by imbalance of chemical Dopamine in the brain, which causes overactivity of deep-seated nuclei of brain.

Medicine like Levadopa has a role in initial stage of parkinson disease only. As parkinsons disease progresses requirement of medicine increases and patient develops troublesome side effects of medicine like abnormal movements, ghabarahat, pain and tonic contraction of limbs and gradually medicines no more help the patient.

With the help of Stereotactic Neurosurgery parkinsons disease patients can be effectively treated. There are two types of stereotactic procedures available to treat these patients worldwide.
