Living With Parkinsons Disease Ways To Manage Parkinsons Disease |
pallidotomyPallidotomy SurgeryPatients with advanced hemiparkinson's disease(symptoms either unilateral or more on one side) are good candidate for Pallidotomy. Pallidotomy is usually successfull in reducing some but not all symptoms in parkinsopns disease. In Pallidotomy technique a small Thermocoagulation (circuit break) is done at postero-ventral part of Pallidum. Pallidotomy helps the patient on the controlateral side of surgery. It improves tremor, stiffness and drug induced side effects called as dyskinesia. Pallidotomy is performed under local anesthesia or numbing of the scalp much like the anethesia dentist uses to numb the teeth, and in most of the cases there are no side effects related to surgery. The pallidotomy is done using a special method known as stereotaxy. Streotactic means accurate localisation f the abnormality or the target in space. It is the very similar to the way we find cities on earth using the longitude and latitude measurements. The Pallidotomy surgery is safe.Risks and complications are not frequent . Knowing about them helps to detect and treat them early. The pallidotomy is done using a special method known as stereotaxy. Bilateral Pallidotomy is also possible but is avoided in lieu of more side effects related to surgery. So far forty-eight Pallidotomy surgeries were performed successfully by Dr.Alok Gupta for last three years.
